Natural Gas Services

What does Border Energy do?

Border Energy supplies natural gas to residential and commercial customers in deregulated energy markets.

How does it work?

Border Energy buys natural gas for enrolled customers and delivers it to local utility providers who distribute the natural gas to residential and commercial end-users. The natural gas is still delivered, serviced, metered and billed by your local utility company.

Why should I use Border Energy to supply my natural gas needs?

Purchasing your natural gas from Border Energy can provide savings and protection against price spikes during the winter when demand for natural gas is much higher.

Are you licensed and certified to supply natural gas?

Yes. We are certified by the Public Utilities Commission of Ohio (PUCO), Indiana Utility Regulatory Commission (IURC) and MPSC to supply gas to the following utilities:

Michigan: Ohio: Indiana:
MichCon Columbia Gas NIPSCO
Consumers Energy
SEMCO Energy

Is your rate fixed or does it change?

We offer a unique "hybrid" of fixed rate pricing for the winter months and variable rate pricing during the summer months. This allows customers to take advantage of lower prices during the summer months when gas is traditionally "cheap" and protects them from price spikes during the winter when demand for natural gas is much higher.

Are there any deposit requirements or membership fees?

No — we will not collect any payment up-front. There are no deposit requirements, enrollment fees or start-up costs associated with designating Border Energy as your supplier of natural gas. Additionally, we do not charge any annual membership or account maintenance fees..

How long is the contract for this offer?

Enrollment with Border Energy constitutes a contract for a period of 12 months; however, your natural gas rate will be fixed for the term specified according to the terms of your service contract.

Do you charge an early termination fee?

We do have small termination fees in place should you wish to terminate your contract early. Please refer to the terms of service for details and the specific termination fees associated with canceling.

What happens when my contract expires?

Border Energy strives to retain customers. Upon expiration of the initial contract period, we will send you a letter providing you with next year's pricing and contract terms. Your re-enrollment with Border Energy is automatic unless you respond within the required time frame as specified in your terms of service agreement and notify us that you wish to cancel your services.

If I enroll and have Border Energy serve as my natural gas supplier, can I decide to change to another choice supplier or return to my utility at a later date?

Yes — if for any reason you decide that you prefer having your energy supplied by your local utility company or another choice marketer you may switch according to the terms of your service contract.

Will I receive a separate bill from Border Energy in addition to my current natural gas utility bill?

No — you will have just one bill per month. Billing will still be conducted by your local utility provider and will not change. The delivery charge and taxes you have always paid to your local utility company will remain the same as well. Additionally, your payment method will not change.

How will my utility company know I’ve enrolled with Border Energy?

Once you enroll with us, we notify your utility company of the change and it should be reflected on your utility bill within 1–2 billing cycles.

Does my local utility provider still deliver the natural gas or does Border Energy have to dig up my lawn to put in a new pipe?

Natural gas is delivered through existing pipelines, just as it is now. No digging required! The only difference will be how much you are paying for the gas that you use.

Where will my natural gas come from?

There are four main supply basins in North America: the Appalachian region, Southwestern and Mid-Continental areas in the United States and Western Canada. Border Energy buys from the producers at whatever supply area is the least expensive and transports the gas via the interstate pipeline system to your local utility provider.

How can your prices be cheaper than the utility company and so low compared to other choice suppliers?

We have a unique business model that keeps our overhead low. We also utilize advanced market tactics for purchasing natural gas. What this means is that we are typically able to pass along great savings over utility company rates to Border Energy customers!

I live in a small house or apartment and don’t use much gas. Can I still enroll with Border Energy to buy my gas even though my usage is low?

Absolutely! We strive to provide the same service and price options to residential and small commercial customers as large industrial facilities have enjoyed for years.

What if I have a problem with my natural gas utility service?

Your utility company will continue to take care of those problems if they occur.

How do I enroll?

Enrollment is easy! You can enroll by clicking the "Plans & Rates" link at the top of any page, choosing residential or business, and selecting your state to begin the signup process, or you can call us toll-free at 1-888-479-4GAS (4427). Electric Services

How does it work?

When you enroll with Border Energy Electric Services, you are choosing to take control of the price you pay for electric. We encourage people to install energy efficient appliances and lights and to conserve their power usage to save money on their electric bill — but we help by lowering the actual rate you pay for electric service.

Do I need any new equipment?

No — we deliver the power to your local utility provider (currently AEP or Duke Energy) and they will continue to deliver the electric to your home via existing power lines. No infrastructure changes are required for residential and most commercial customers.

Why would the utility let me switch?

Energy deregulation — the Public Utility Commission of Ohio mandated several years ago that customers should have the ability to choose their electric provider.

Why hasn’t this option been available to me until now?

AEP and Duke Energy offered competitive prices relative to market prices — but this has changed in the last year. Border is now able to buy power at wholesale prices and supply it to you at lower prices than your local utility is offering.

What are the components of my electric bill?

Generation: The cost of generating your electricity; Hydro, Nuclear and Coal are the primary generation sources of electric in this area of the country.

Transmission: The cost of transporting your electric on "the grid" to your local utility provider.

Distribution: The cost for the final leg of electric distribution to your home or location. This is also where customer charges, fees and riders are billed by the utility.

What components of my electric service does Border Energy offer?

Border offers savings programs or competitive rates and quotes its prices on providing you with Generation and Transmission service. This is roughly 75% of your bill. Unfortunately, there is no way for us to save you money on the distribution charges your utility passes along.

Will I receive a separate bill from Border Energy in addition to my current electric utility bill?

No — you will have just one bill per month. Billing will still be conducted by your local utility provider and will not change. The delivery charge and taxes you have always paid to your local utility company will remain the same as well. Additionally, your payment method will not change.

I don’t understand all of this – I just pay the electric bill as it comes in – why should I care?

Because nothing will change except for how much you have to pay each month.
